Friendly House, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 non-profit agency located in Phoenix, Arizona whose primary function is to provide a variety of educational and social service programming aimed at addressing the needs of low-income individuals and families, vulnerable populations and diverse communities. Additionally, Friendly House operates a charter school, Academia del Pueblo, with the mission to provide an academic environment which promotes a culture of high expectations to students from diverse cultures. Friendly House was organized in 1920 as the Phoenix Americanization Committee by a group of Phoenix citizens with the assistance of the United States Department of Education. In our 100-year history, the work of Friendly House has resulted in building resilient communities that are helping to spur economic development, stabilize neighborhoods and revitalize our city.

 

 

Position Summary

 

To assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, and other team members in providing a quality instructional program to continuously improve student achievement. The paraprofessional functions in relation to the deliverance of concentrated or specialized educational assistance for the teachers and students associated with the school. The personnel may not execute the routine teaching jobs; however, certainly, perform teaching assistants and student supervision duties along with administrative support tasks. Duties may include classroom discipline and control, physical classroom maintenance, student management, directing of independent study, parent-teacher conference management, and After School tutoring.

 

Position Qualifications

 

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience in youth programming, preferably in an elementary school setting.
  • Ability to communicate with different audiences including school administration, teachers, parents, students and community members.
  • Must possess a current State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ Years as a teacher-aide in elementary setting, OR
  • 2+ Years as a teacher- aide in the secondary setting.
  • Associates Degree.
  • Complete CPR, First Aid and AED training within 90 days of employment (training paid for by employer).
  • Maintain a positive attitude about Academia del Pueblo Elementary School on and off premises.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively observes assigned work hours.
  • Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.
  • Follows the daily schedule as prescribed.
  • Adjusts to work assignments and/or schedule changes.
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by the teacher.
  • Provides extra assistance to students with exceptionalities, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical and/or mental disabilities, and 504 Plans.
  • Assists the teacher in preparing materials and equipment for direct instructional activity, including locating, copying, collating, distributing and/or grouping materials to support instructional activities planned by the teacher.
  • Assists with bulletin boards and decorations for instructional purposes and for special events.
  • Supervises students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips. Communicates clearly and positively with students and all stakeholders.
  • Performs assigned non-instructional classroom duties.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, Principal or his/her designee.
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with Principal, supervising teacher, students, parents, staff and public.
  • Participates in professional learning activities which align with school improvement goals.
  • Participates in staff development opportunities provided by the district Demonstrates a positive attitude toward work assignment.
  • Prolonged periods of standing or sitting could be required.
  • Accepts responsibility for the work assigned and accepts constructive criticism.
  • Additional school level responsibilities as assigned by Principal or his/her designee
